Sid Richardson Museum Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Experience the completely renovated Sid Richardson Museum, which is marking its 25th anniversary during 2007. A destination for those who enjoy paintings of the Old West, the Museum features works by Frederic Remington (1861-1909), Charles M. Russell (1864-1926), and other artists from the personal collection of the legendary Texas oilman and philanthropist, Sid W. Richardson (1891-1959). The anniversary exhibition consists of 39 paintings from the permanent collection.

The Museum is recognized as having one of the most significant private collections of Remingtons and Russells in the United States. Since its opening in 1982, nearly one million visitors from all 50 states and 68 countries have toured the Museum at 309 Main Street in downtown Fort Worth’s historic Sundance Square.

The Museum closed in the summer of 2005 for renovation and reopened in November 2006. Architect David M. Schwarz’s inspired design includes an elegant façade, redesigned exhibition spaces, a new education resource center, a new group entry area, and an enlarged Museum Store featuring unique Western gifts. Special lighting in the galleries enhances the distinctive characteristics and colors of the paintings. Each painting has a new, gilded frame reflective of the era when the work was created.

The education resource center and group entry area were designed to accommodate the Museum’s expanding educational program. Presentations, group tours, outreach services, and teacher resources are offered at no cost. All educational services, including docent-led tours, are available by appointment. On the Second Saturday of November, the 10th, at 2 p.m., docent Roberta Atkins will perform her original monologue For Love of Russell portraying Nancy Russell, the wife of “cowboy artist” Charles M. Russell.

Admission is free. The Sid Richardson Museum is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The Museum is closed on major holidays. For more information, visit www.sidrichardsonmuseum.org or call 817-332-6554.
