Benny & Beethoven with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra pays tribute to legendary performer Benny Goodman and the great composer Beethoven in a unique concert event. The performances feature two Copland masterpieces, the popular suite to the ballet Appalachian Spring and his one-of-a-kind Concerto for Clarinet, written for the legendary band leader Benny Goodman and performed by David Shifrin. One of Beethoven's most heartfelt works, the high-spirited Second Symphony - written as he struggled with the trauma of going deaf, provides a breathtaking finale. Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducts these concerts February 10-12 at Bass Performance Hall. An Avery Fisher Prize winner, Shifrin is in constant demand as an orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. He has performed with the Philadelphia and Minnesota symphony orchestras as well as throughout Europe and Asia. In addition, he has served as principal clarinetist with the American Symphony Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra, among others. Shifrin has received critical acclaim as a recitalist, appearing at such venues as Alice Tully Hall, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and the Library of Congress. As a chamber musician he has collaborated with artists such as the Emerson String Quartet and pianists André Watts and Emanuel Ax. Shifrin has received three Grammy Award nominations, and his recording of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra was named record of the year by Stereo Review. He was appointed artistic director of Chamber Music Northwest in 1981 and served as artistic director of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center from 1992 to 2004. Concerts begin at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $13-$72 at www.fwsymphony.org, or at 817-665-6000, or the FWSO Ticket Office at 330 E. Fourth Street, Suite 200.
