Cowboys and Culture: Only in Fort Worth
By David A. DuBois, President and CEO, Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau

As the new president and CEO of the Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau, I am honored to have been given the opportunity to promote this world-class destination at such an exciting time. From an expanded downtown hotel landscape, to our renowned museums, arts festivals and attractions, no other city offers such a unique mix of “Cowboys and Culture.” And Fort Worth’s February events are no exception.

The 111th Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, with attendance topping out near 1 million visitors in 2006, completes its run on Feb. 4. Celebrating its 120th anniversary, “The Last Great Gunfight,” is a historical reenactment of the famous Luke Short versus Jim Courtright duel outside the White Elephant Saloon that will take place on Feb. 8. Fort Worth always offers thrilling Western heritage in the Historic Stockyards with the world’s-largest honky-tonk, Billy Bob’s Texas, and the Stockyards Championship Rodeo held every Friday and Saturday night.

Artistic culture abounds with multiple performances by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra at Bass Hall, and a weekend of dance as Texas Ballet Theater performs “Romance to Ragtime” Feb. 16-18. You can catch star-quality performances, such as the symphony orchestra, ballet, traveling musicals or top music acts, multiple nights every week at Bass Hall.

One of Fort Worth’s signature annual events, the Cowtown Marathon, will have the streets filled with runners of all ages and abilities on Feb. 24. Over the past 28 years, the Cowtown Marathon has grown into one of the most prestigious running events in the country, offering fun racing options for the whole family, while promoting health awareness throughout the community. It is evident that our city’s distinct blend of cowboys and culture can be experienced year-round, making Fort Worth a destination worth every minute. To learn more about any of these, or other, events in Fort Worth, log on to www.fortworth.com, call 800-433-5747 or stop by one of our Visitor Information Centers.

Yearlong Astronomy Course for All Ages
By Billy Huckaby, Director, Glen Rose Convention & Visitors Bureau

The second Monday in January 2007, Fossil Rim began offering a yearlong course in Astronomy. The class will be designed to be multi-level, so all family members can benefit, and have enough “meat” to it that High School level home school students could count it as a year of Astronomy. The 2-3 hour class will meet the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month, at 7 p.m. at Wolf Ridge Camp. (In the summer months, this time may be changed to 8 p.m. when there are longer days and shorter nights.) Everyone should bring binoculars, and Fossil Rim’s Star Hoppers will also be used. Hands-on activities will be offered on those evenings, and suggested reading and activities for home. The class will run for a full calendar year, January through December, and use as a base text 365 Starry Nights by Chet Raymo. This book will be required for each family. Cost of the classes will be $40 per month for a family of four, with $10 extra per additional family member. If you just want your high schooler to drive out and take the course individually, the cost will be $30 per person per month. Each month must be pre-paid, and Fossil Rim must maintain a minimum of 10 families throughout the course to avoid additional fees. To sign up, call Ms. Tessa at 254-897-2960 ext. 216, or e-mail her at homeschool@fossilrim.org. When visiting Fossil Rim, be sure to allow plenty of time to explore historic downtown Glen Rose, as well as the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center and Dinosaur Valley State Park. A wide selection of hotels, cabins, and bed & breakfasts are available to choose from, so plan on spending the weekend. Glen Rose is best known as the “Dinosaur Capital of Texas,” and was also named America’s Dream Town for 2004. For a visitor packet or more information, call the Glen Rose Convention & Visitors Bureau at 1-888-346-6282 or visit their website at www.glenrosetexas.net.
