Word from the CVBs Celebrate Black History Month in Fort Worth February is Black History Month, a time of remembrance and reflection on the African-American past. The Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau celebrates the diversity of the City of Fort Worth and encourages you to visit these special attractions and events during February and year-round. The National Cowboys of Color Museum and Hall of Fame is dedicated to the lives of men and women of color who have made exemplary contributions to Western heritage, past and present. These pioneering individuals are celebrated and honored with a unique museum experience. Each August, the Museum inducts deserving individuals into its Hall of Fame. This outstanding Museum offers a look at the lives of cowboys of color through the eyes of those who have lived it. For more information, visit www.cowboysofcolor.org. Fort Worth’s diverse cultural offerings this February include Bass Performance Hall’s presentation of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. A national treasure of the new South Africa, Ladysmith Black Mambazo is perhaps best known in the U.S. for her collaboration with Paul Simon on his groundbreaking, award-winning Graceland album, The Lion King II and Eddie Murphy’s popular comedy, Coming to America. For ticket information, visit www.basshall.com. If you are looking for a more dramatic remembrance, visit Jubilee Theatre. Its cast is dedicated to creating theatrical productions reflecting the African-American experience. From February 1-24, see A Lesson Before Dying. The play by Romulus Linney, based on the Pulitzer Prize nominated novel by Ernest J. Gaines, examines the basic predicament of what it is to be a human being. The Horse Country Tour of North Texas is now available as a guided tour, meandering through beautiful Denton County, but with the added benefit of knowledgeable, enthusiastic and fun escorts on each tour. The tours will be available on the first Saturday of every month, beginning Saturday, February 2, 2008. Each tour will begin at 9 a.m. and will conclude at 1 p.m. Located just northeast of Fort Worth, the horse country region extends through Denton County to the Red River at the Oklahoma State line. Known as "Horse Country USA", the area is populated with more than 300 farms and ranches, many of which are breeding and training facilities. The horse population exceeds 25,000 and includes many different breeds from Quarter Horses to Thoroughbreds and from Paints to Andalusians. The tour takes visitors among farms specializing in a variety of disciplines including halter horses, pleasure horses, cutting horses, reining, hunter-jumpers, and more. Lovely country roads wind along miles of pipe and rail fencing, beautiful pastures, impressive barns and, of course, lots and lots of horses. The Saturday tour will originate at the Denton County Historical Park at the corner of Carroll and Mulberry, near the Bayless-Selby House Museum in Downtown Denton, just off the Courthouse Square. It will depart at 9 a.m., include visits to several ranches, then return to the Courthouse Square by 1 p.m. when guests will be released on the Square to enjoy lunch on their own. The number of tickets for each tour will be limited to a maximum of 50 people. Tickets will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Tickets are $25 and should be purchased in advance at the Denton Convention & Visitor Bureau office, 414 Carroll Blvd. in Denton or by calling 940-382-7895. Day of tour tickets will be available on a stand-by basis only, but will cost $30 and will be available with cash payment only. Convention & Visitor Bureau Director Kim Phillips stated that the tour's popularity is the impetus behind making the Horse Country Tour a static Denton attraction. "Having the Horse Country Tour available year-round, at a set-time where people can extend their stay in a hotel, or plan a trip especially to go on the tour is going to answer a long-time demand of our visitors. That demand is to have the opportunity to experience the richer version of the Horse Country Tour ñ richer being with one of our expert, fun guides." For a Horse Country brochure or to get details about participating on one of the Horse Country guided tours, please call the Denton Convention & Visitor Bureau toll free at 1-888-381-1818 or visit online at www.discoverdenton.com or www.horsecountrytours.com.
