Frontier Forts Muster and Comanche Pow Wow in Fort Worth
By Douglas Harman
President and CEO, Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau

The Texas Frontier Forts Muster returns to Fort Worth April 23-25, 2004in the Historic Stockyards. Few people realize that Fort Worth actually began as a frontier fort in 1849. After the War with Mexico, the U.S. government established a line of forts from North Texas to the Rio Grande River in order to protect settlers. Fort Worth began as the northern fort in this defense system. Although the fort only lasted a few years, it planted the seed for a new city to be born on the bluff where the Tarrant County Courthouse now stands. The Forts Muster will provide a broad range of interesting activities for school groups, families and serious students of Texas history. Historical forts from around the state will set up camps with soldiers in frontier period uniforms, tents, and weapons. A military parade will take place twice each day.

The Southwest Regional Cavalry Games will take place, with troopers putting their horses through the military drills of the era. The Quanah Parker Comanche Pow Wow will also be held from Friday night to Saturday night. For more information, contact the Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau at 817-336-8791 or visit the website at www.fortworth.com.

New Glen Rose Walking Tour Map Available
by Billy Huckaby
Glen Rose Convention & Visitors Bureau

Glen Rose is blessed with an historic downtown square where most of the original buildings are still intact. A walking tour map is now available to allow visitors to not only read the history of Glen Rose, but also see the individual buildings.

A total of 62 buildings are profiled on the map, which includes a number of historic photos and brief history of the area.

The area included in the map covers approximately a 10 block section of downtown and includes Heritage Park. Heritage Park is home to four historic buildings including the Farr House, Wheeler/Epps/McMahom cabin, telephone building and the Lanham Mill Schoolhouse.

While Glen Rose had all of the usual businesses, such as hardware stores, restaurants and theaters, most people are not aware that Glen Rose was once home of the smallest Coca Cola bottling plant in the world. Built in 1932 the plant featured a foot-powered bottling machine and deliveries were made in Model T trucks.

Glen Rose was also once home to a number of sanitariums, although health resorts would be a more fitting description today. Many of these buildings are still standing and serve as homes and businesses.

Inn On The River was originally the George P. Snyder Sanitarium and was built in 1920-21. Snyder was a well known magnetic healer and character, who was also supposed to have psychic healing powers.

The Milling Sanitarium was built in 1911 and additions made to it in the 1930s and 40s. Today the complex is a private residence and Barnard Street Cottage.

Denton's Texas Storytelling Festival
By Kim Dillon Phillips, Vice President
Denton Convention & Visitors Bureau

Come to Denton March 25th through the 28th, 2004 for our 19th annual Texas Storytelling Festival. Audiences will hear spine-tingling ghost tales, Texas legends, Spanish cuentos, Irish yarns, memorable war stories, toe-taping music and many other things. Liz Carpenter, the former White House Press Secretary to Lady Bird Johnson and a Texas legend herself, will tell some stories of her own along with P. J. Pierce who is writing Carpenters biography. Held in Civic Center Park just a few blocks away from Denton's historic Courthouse Square, the storytelling festival is a one-of-a-kind event, featuring great family entertainment that includes stories and music from a variety of traditions.

Under large circus-style tents, audience members sit on folding chairs as they fall under the spell of traditional storytelling, laugh at shaggy dog stories and tall tales, and perhaps learn a new urban legend or two or just reminisce about times gone by. Visitors can shop in the festival's gift shop and easily have a great meal onsite or in one of the nearby restaurants.

From annual favorites such as "Tiny Tales for Tiny Tots," and expertly told Ghost Tales to this year's unique feature "From Our Mother's Hands" focusing on quilts, quilting patterns, embroidery, and other hand work. And this is just a short list of things you will hear and see.

For those who want to make this an overnight adventure, Denton offers quality hotels, over 100 dining options, specialty shops, history, museums, and year-round fun.
