The 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition
By Douglas Harman
President and CEO, Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau

Every four years, Fort Worth is host to one of the most prestigious cultural events in the world--the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. May 10 through June 5, 2005 will be the twelfth Competition, and for the second time, the finals will be held at the beautiful Bass Performance Hall in Sundance Square. Van Cliburn became an international celebrity as a result of his dramatic victory at the 1958 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. At a time when the Cold War made relations between the East and the West very difficult, Van Cliburn became a hero in Russia as well as in the United States. After his return from Moscow, Fort Worth piano instructors, key citizens and TCU came together to create the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition as a way to recognize and help talented young pianists.

Each time the Van Cliburn Competition is held, Fort Worth earns a special place in the world of international performing arts and culture. A five-member jury from the Van Cliburn Competition conducts more than 100 audition recitals around the world to select the final group of thirty finalists who come to Fort Worth for the Competition. From May 20-24, preliminary competitive performances lead to the selection of twelve pianists who perform in the semi-finals from May 26-29. From June 1-5, the six finalists perform with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. This year, the awards ceremony takes place on June 5 with Sir Anthony Hopkins announcing the winners. Millions of persons will hear the Competition through world-wide radio broadcasts, and later in 2005, PBS will show a television series on this year’s competition. Tickets for this exciting event can be secured through www.cliburn.org or by calling 800-462-7979.

A History of Glen Rose’s 1860s Barnard’s Mill
By Billy Huckaby
Glen Rose Convention & Visitors Bureau

There are not many cities in Texas where the original structures from when the town was first settled are still standing, but Glen Rose is the exception. Founded around 1860 by Charles Barnard, Glen Rose is still home to Barnard’s Mill which has had a long and diverse existence.

The mill was constructed of rock and other native materials, featuring walls that are almost two feet thick. The solid construction provided protection from not only the elements but also Indians.

The mill is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and was originally what the name implies, a mill. It also served the community’s social scene providing a location for dances and meetings. Over the years the mill has been added to and served Glen Rose in a number of capacities including as a cotton gin and a hospital.

Today a portion of the mill houses the Barnard’s Mill Art Museum and features the works of several prominent artists including Amy Miears Jackson, Jack Bryant, R. Kleinfelder and Robert Summers. Currently the museum is only open on Saturday and Sunday, but there are plans to expand the days, and the museum can also be toured by appointment.

For more information on Barnard’s Mill or Glen Rose call 254-897-3081 or visit www.glenrosetexas.net.
