KEY Fort Worth

Word from the CVBs

Art is Abundant in Fort Worth this Spring
By David A. DuBois, President and CEO, Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau

Considered “the museum capital of the Southwest,” Fort Worth is known for its Western heritage, but also as a thriving center for the arts. One of the best ways to experience the city’s artistic mix of “Cowboys and Culture” is by visiting Fort Worth’s celebrated museums. This spring, you won’t want to miss our phenomenal, must-see exhibits.

The Amon Carter Museum is hosting two significant traveling exhibits including William H. Johnson’s “World on Paper,” on display through April 8. The prints, serigraphs, drawings and watercolors in the show provide a lively overview of his career, from his early years as an artist in Scandinavia to his time in Harlem in the 1940s. Also exhibited through May 13, “Forging an American Identity: The Art of William Ranney” focuses on his painting in the mid-1800s. Ranney’s subjects represent the diversity of early America-from a Revolutionary War hero, to a family headed west toward a new life.

At the legendary Kimbell Art Museum, “Drama and Desire: Japanese Paintings from the Floating World, 1690-1850,” a focus through April 29, explores the stylish preoccupations of the “two places of iniquity”-the world of the theaters and the brothels. While many of these artists are well known in the West for their woodblock prints, it was in the medium of painting that they actually received their major commissions.

Through May 27 at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, “Pretty Baby” covers multiple aspects of childhood, with an emphasis on the transition from one stage of childhood to the next. The exhibition features works that capture anything from romantic and innocent childlike reverie to works that question established idealized states of childhood.
