Two Museums Celebrate the Cowboy
By Douglas Harman, President and CEO, Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau

The new IMAX film coming to the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History will put the legend of the cowboy into a proper international context. The film Ride Around the World will debut on May 27th and continue until October 1, 2006.

This important film begins with the story of the cowboy in Morocco and Spain, then travels to Argentina, Chile and Mexico, and ends the saga in Texas. The global history and culture of the cowboy is frequently unrecognized. The old Saturday afternoon “B movies” certainly never reflected a world perspective about the silver screen heroes, and television over the past decades, has also failed to dramatize international cowboy traditions. The film comes at a time when people around the world are identifying common roots and traditions that tie together their many cultures, regions, nations, and religions. In addition to the film will also be a new exhibit at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame featuring artifacts from the many different horse cultures shown in the film. The exhibit, “Ride: A Global Adventure,” will include saddles, spurs, clothing and other items from horse cultures around the world. It also opens on May 27th. You will be able to see firsthand the wonderful variety of designs for equestrian gear from North Africa, Spain, South America, Mexico, and Texas.

The IMAX film and the exhibit are good examples of the collaboration between the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. Fort Worth is fortunate to have museums that are recognized for their quality and variety of art, history and science. It’s no wonder that Fort Worth is considered the “Museum Capital of the Southwest.” For more information about the film and exhibit, call the Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau at 817-336-8791 or contact either museum.
