Fort Worth Cats to Honor Five Hall of Famers in 2006 The Fort Worth Cats will honor five Hall of Famers in 2006 beginning with Fergie Jenkins and Duke Snider the Opening Weekend, May 11-13, at historic LaGrave Field. Jenkins will throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day, May 11, when the Cats take on the Shreveport Sports at 7:05 p.m. Inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1991, Jenkins pitched 19 years in the majors for the Phillies, Cubs, Rangers and Red Sox. He ended his career with a record of 284-226. The Cats will honor Duke Snider on May 13. The organization retired Snider’s No. 4 Cats’ jersey in 2004. Edwin Donald “Duke” Snider played for the Cats in 1946. He batted .250 in 68 regular season games helping the Cats to a first place finish in the Texas League during the regular season. Snider debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, but it wasn’t until 1949 that he became a regular. Nicknamed “The Duke of Flatbush,” Snider played for six Dodgers’ pennant winners. Brooklyn won the World Championship in 1955 when the Dodgers finally beat the Yankees. Duke led all Dodgers’ regulars with a .320 batting average, and his four home runs made him the first player to hit four homers in two different World Series. His lifetime 11 Series home runs and 26 RBI are the best marks for any National Leaguer. The seven-time N.L. All-Star was elected to Baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1980 with 407 home runs and 1,333 RBI to go along with a career batting average of .295. Fans can see these legends at LaGrave Field in May.
