Word from the CVBs

New Opera Festival Begins in May
By David A. DuBois, CMP, CAE, President and CEO of the Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau

The performing arts scene in Fort Worth is as impressive as the city’s unrivaled Western heritage. In the “City of Cowboys and Culture,” the arts are celebrated every day with world-class symphonies, ballets, and opera performances at an incredible choice of venues, including Bass Performance Hall, named one of the top 10 opera houses in the world.

With its international reputation for the arts continuing to grow, Fort Worth is delighted to add the new Fort Worth Opera Festival, starting May 19 and running through June 9, to the list.

Founded in 1946, the Fort Worth Opera is the oldest, continually performing opera company in Texas and one of the 14 oldest companies in the United States. After 60 years of producing operas over a regular fall and winter season, Fort Worth Opera announced a major change in its presentation format, now condensing its entire schedule to an annual festival with all of its operas and concerts being presented during a four week period. The lineup for the inaugural 2007 Fort Worth Opera Festival includes the much anticipated world premiere of a new opera, entitled Frau Margot, directed by Frank Corsaro and written by Thomas Pasatieri, who is returning to opera after 20 years of working in Hollywood on movie scores. The other operas are Puccini’s Madame Butterfly and Verdi’s Falstaff. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra will perform with each opera.

“Flat Stanley” Gets Away to Granbury: Part II
By Carolyn Kagy, Marketing Manager, Granbury Convention & Visitors Bureau

Recently the Granbury Visitor Center was lucky enough to receive in the mail “Flat Stanley” from a young student in San Saba, Texas. This is part two of his experiences and adventures while spending time in Granbury, Texas. Stanley awakes refreshed after his restful night in one of Granbury’s more than 20 bed & breakfast inns. After breakfast, he decides to walk around the downtown square and buy gifts for his family from the more than 40 unique shops and boutiques. He treats himself to lunch at a fifties style soda shop, one of many restaurants on the square. Then he is swept off to another fun location.

Just behind City Hall, Stanley finds the “Moments in Time” hike & bike trail and begins exploring. The scenery of Shanley Park is filled with large shade trees, a peaceful creek and plenty of fresh air to stimulate Stanley’s senses. Stanley finds out that this will be the location of Granbury’s annual “Moments in Time Paint Out and Art Walk,” May 18-20, featuring artists from around the state. He sits for a while in the grass; daydreaming about the stories he will tell his family when he gets home.

For evening entertainment, where will Stanley go now? Next month Stanley’s adventures will continue.

For information on all that Granbury has to offer, please call the Granbury Convention & Visitors Bureau at 1-800-950-2212 or log on to www.granburytx.com.

Dinosaurs will Again Roam the Earth in Texas
By Billy Huckaby, Director, Glen Rose Convention & Visitors Bureau

The dinosaur prints at Dinosaur Valley State Park prove dinosaurs once roamed the hill country of Texas. Now, dinosaurs will once again dominate Texas with the opening of Dinosaur World in Glen Rose.

Dinosaur World is an outdoor dinosaur museum where over 100 life-sized dinosaurs in an outdoor setting will wait to greet visitors. The park is scheduled to open in spring of 2008. Dinosaur World will be located immediately before the entrance of Dinosaur Valley State Park.

“Dinosaur World, Glen Rose,” is the third Dinosaur World location. The park in Plant City, Florida, just outside of Tampa, opened in 1998. The Cave City, Kentucky, location, just one hour from both Nashville, TN and Louisville, KY opened in 2004.

The dinosaurs are so believable that visitors to the Florida and Kentucky locations claim to see them moving through the shadows cast by the many native trees. The dinosaur trail itself will be a beautiful walk through a native forest. “The atmosphere of the park is perfect. It will pique the curiosity of all ages,” said Marketing Director Nicole Randall. “Our guests will find amazing artifacts and fun, educational facts at every exhibit.”

There will be an indoor Prehistoric Museum to house dinosaur and other prehistoric exhibits. The Dinosaur Movie Cave will show short educational dinosaur movies in a unique setting. Guests entering the Movie Cave will be watched by a dinosaur as they enter a man-made cave to learn about prehistoric creatures.

Dinosaur World is educational and very family friendly. Even pets on leashes will be welcome to enjoy the park. There will be a large amount of free parking, very affordable group rates and easy to read park maps making Dinosaur World perfect for buses and larger groups including birthday parties.

For more information on Dinosaur World, call 813-717-9865 or visit www.dinoworld.net for more information. For more information on Glen Rose and the surrounding area, contact the Glen Rose Convention and Visitors Bureau at 1-888-346-6282 or check out their website at www.glenrosetexas.net. Come see why Glen Rose was named America’s Dream Town in 2004.
