Scottish Festival Celebrates 21st Year in Fun Central
By Diane Brandon,
Vice President Communications, Marketing & Research, Arlington Convention & Visitors Bureau

Come to Fun Central this June 1-3 and celebrate the 21st anniversary of the Texas Scottish Festival & Highland Games. Long celebrated as the place for Scots, Scottish-Americans, and those just interested in “all things Scottish” to meet and mingle, The Texas Scottish Festival, is one of the largest gatherings of Scots in the United States. The event showcases the best in Scottish music and entertainment, great food, educational seminars, Scottish athletics, Highland and Scottish country-dance, and children’s events. It’s a weekend made in tartan heaven!

New to the line-up this year will be a “Calling of the Clans” on Friday night. Don’t miss this moving ceremony as the clans are called together once more.

Start your weekend out on Friday night with the traditional “Howdy BBQ” then attend the twilight “Calling of the Clans” followed by a traditional “jump in and participate” ceilidh (ceilidh is just Gaelic for party!) in the Glencoe Tent or visit the fantastic line-up of headliners like Bad Haggis and regulars like Alex Beaton, Alasdair Fraser and Brian McNeill in the Glengarry Tent.

Whether you are coming to the Festival for the first time or the twenty-first time, Festival organizers bid you Ceud Mile Failte! A Hundred Thousand Welcomes!

Book your trip to the Scottish festival at our website, www.arlington.org. Click on the Funtastic Packages icon. Add some other exciting Fun Central events and stay an extra day or two for a great FUN CENTRAL family vacation.

“Flat Stanley” Gets Away to Granbury
By Carolyn Kagy, Marketing Manager Granbury Convention & Visitors Bureau

The Granbury Visitor Center was lucky enough to receive in the mail “Flat Stanley” from a young student in San Saba, Texas. His experiences and adventures while spending time in Granbury, Texas continue. After his rest in Shanley Park, Flat Stanley decides to attend a performance at the lovely, art-deco style Granbury Live theatre. He finds a limited engagement of “Take It Easy”– A Concert Tribute to the Eagles, performed by The Brooks Brothers from Branson, Missouri. Stanley sings along through the whole concert.

The Granbury Riverboat provides the perfect Friday night for Stanley. The Murder Mystery dinner cruise offers an evening of fun filled pirate-themed adventure on the sparkling waters of Lake Granbury. Sword fights and mutiny are topped with a fabulous dinner.

Saturday finds Stanley back in the historic district of Granbury. He hears how the assassin John Wilkes Booth moved to Granbury and tended bar as John St. Helen. Lots of history and memorabilia can be found in the Hood County Old Jail Museum and many say ghosts inhabit the hanging tower. A visit to the Granbury Cemetery reveals more legend and lore, as Stanley finds the final resting place of the infamous outlaw Jesse James, Granbury’s namesake – General Hiriam B. Granbury, and the grandson of Davy Crockett. Truly Granbury is “Where Texas History Lives”.

Stanley’s time in Granbury grows short – what lies ahead?

For detailed information on Granbury please call the Granbury Convention & Visitors Bureau at 1-800-950-2212 or log on to www.granburytx.com.

Abundant Rains Provide Refreshing Fun
By Billy Huckaby, Director, Glen Rose Convention & Visitors Bureau

With summer just around the corner, the abundant spring rains have made the Brazos and Paluxy rivers perfect places for refreshing fun and recreation. Glen Rose provides the perfect escape, where the two rivers converge, southwest of Fort Worth. The Paluxy River flows through Glen Rose and is also the location of Dinosaur Valley State Park and the world famous dinosaur tracks. The Paluxy flows through downtown Glen Rose and provides the perfect backdrop to this quaint town.

Big Rocks Park is a Glen Rose institution and the location where folks have gathered for generations to relax and cool off in the Paluxy River. Huge boulders give the park its name and with the shallow depth of the river and a solid rock bottom, it is a favorite getaway for families. A new dam located at Big Rocks Park is providing additional recreational opportunities and promises a more steady flow to the river.

For the more adventurous, the Brazos River is a popular stop. The Brazos is the most storied river in Texas and a great place to canoe or tube. The river also provides a number of fishing and camping opportunities. Campgrounds located on the rivers include Tres Rios River Ranch (254-897-4253), Oakdale Park (254-897-2321), Camp n’ Fish and Dinosaur Valley State Park (254-897-4588). Some of the campgrounds offer inner tube rentals, while Rhodes Rentals (254-897-4214) and Low Water Bridge (254-897-3666) both offer canoe and tube rentals, as well as providing transportation to and from the rivers. Glen Rose offers a historic downtown for shopping and dining, as well as a number of hotels, bed and breakfasts and cabins. All located within an hour of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, providing not only an escape, but also a gas saving trip.

For more information on Glen Rose, all of the attractions, lodging and the surrounding area, contact the Glen Rose Convention and Visitors Bureau at 1-888-346-6282 or check out their website at www.glenrosetexas.net. Come see why Glen Rose was named America’s Dream Town in 2004.
