KEY Fort Worth

Word from the CVBs

Cabela’s Has Arrived in Fort Worth
Douglas Harman
President and CEO, Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau

Cabela’s has opened in Fort Worth! It is the newest Texas-sized place to visit in the Alliance area of North Fort Worth. Not many years ago, when one talked about “North Fort Worth” it meant the Stockyards or maybe Meacham Airport. Fossil Creek was even north of North Fort Worth in the minds of some people. The landscape of Fort Worth has gone through a dramatic transformation, and the arrival of Cabela’s is the latest significant change in our local landscape.

The origin of these changes go back to the late 1980s when Ross Perot’s group proposed a new airport north of Fort Worth. Mayor Bob Bolen championed the idea with the City Council and the community. I had the honor of being City Manager at that time when Alliance Airport was first considered. A number of persons thought it was risky extending the City’s boundary so far north. The “risk” has paid off, however, for Fort Worth and North Texas, and Cabela’s is just the latest example of how the Alliance development has benefited Fort Worth. Alliance Airport quickly became a major transportation center, bringing together air, road and rail transportation, and as a result, attracted numerous business operations interested in the great transportation capacity of the area. American Airlines, Federal Express and many others soon came to Alliance. The arrival of the Texas Motor Speedway brought the Alliance area into the tourism field in a big way as the second largest sports facility in the United States. It now has two annual NASCAR events, in addition to numerous other races and events at the facility.

Cabela’s is a remarkable store, and its focus on outdoor life has a great future in “North Fort Worth.” Shopping at Cabela’s is an experience to be remembered. The moment you see the store, with its great cowboy bronze sculpture in front of the building, you will know that you are in a special city - Fort Worth, Texas - A City of Cowboys and Culture!

Shaking Things Up at the Historic Granbury Opera House
By Carolyn Kagy, Marketing Manager
Granbury Convention & Visitors Bureau

John Wilkes Booth is pouring drinks and quoting Shakespeare in Granbury. Well, it’s possible that the infamous actor did work at a saloon under the Granbury Opera House after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. That is, of course, if the rumors are true that Booth was not the one who was shot in the barn in Virginia. Over a century later, people at the Granbury Opera House, located in the historic Town Square in Granbury, Texas, are still shaking things up. Thomas Morrissey, new Producing Artistic Director recently unveiled TEXAS STAR THEATRE at the Historic Granbury Opera House. “I want everyone to know that this is a new regional theatre company. What I think people will notice first is that the quality will be outstanding and that we don’t intend to play it safe,” explained Mr. Morrissey.

The season starts out with a bang when Broadway sensation Cindy Benson and stage veteran Michael Kostroff star in the critically acclaimed musical Gypsy, showing through July 24th. The last time they were on stage together was in last year’s national tour of Les Misérables. These actors represent the quality of talent we will continue to bring to our theater.

This season has something for everyone. One of the most popular musicals of all time, Grease, opens on July 24th. For the fall, Stars Over Texas, The Boys Next Door, and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change will be offered. The season concludes with a family Christmas Musical.

TEXAS STAR THEATRE at the Historic Granbury Opera House is located at 133 East Pearl Street in Granbury, Texas. For information regarding performance schedules and ticket information at the theatre, call 817-573-9191 or visit their website at www.TexasStarTheatre.org.

Bluegrass Music In Glen Rose
By Billy Huckaby
Glen Rose Convention & Visitors Bureau

Glen Rose is officially the “Dinosaur Capital of Texas,” but unofficially it can also lay claim to being the “Bluegrass Capital of Texas.” A number of bluegrass events take place in Glen Rose throughout the year and coming up July 15 and 16 will be the 21st annual “Mays’ Bluegrass Pickin’ Under The Stars” at Oakdale Park.

Oakdale Park is the site of a number of bluegrass events throughout the year, along with Tres Rios in Glen Rose. Oakdale Park is one of the oldest rv parks and campgrounds in Texas and offers lots of family fun. In addition to plenty of bluegrass music, Oakdale Park features a swimming pool and is right across the street from Big Rocks Park and the Paluxy River.

With plenty of water fun and huge shade trees, Oakdale Park has long offered a cooling escape from hot summer days. In addition to rv spaces, Oakdale Park also has tent camping available and cabins for the less adventurous.

For more information on Glen Rose and the surrounding area, contact the Glen Rose Convention and Visitors Bureau at 1-888-346-6282 or check out their website at www.glenrosetexas.net. Oakdale Park’s website is www.oakdalepark.com.
