By David A. DuBois, CMP, CAE, President and CEO of the Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau

There’s no better place to soak up the sights and sounds of summer than in Fort Worth. From portraiture and picnics to festivals and, of course, fireworks, Fort Worth is filled with plenty of ways to have a sensational summer. Join us for the following events: Concerts in the Garden –Break out the picnic basket and relax under the stars while listening to great music provided by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and friends. With music that ranges from classical and big band to blues and rock ‘n roll, this event, running through July 7, has something for everyone. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Concerts begin at 8 p.m. Fireworks after every performance!

The national tour of the hit Broadway musical, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, is coming to Bass Performance Hall. The musical centers on two con men living on the French Riviera -Lawrence Jameson, who makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money; and a smalltime crook named Freddy Benson, who swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother’s failing health. The show runs July 24-29, 2007, at Bass Performance Hall.

The major international exhibition The Mirror and the Mask: Portraiture in the Age of Picasso, organized by the Kimbell Art museum with the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, and the Fundación Caja Madrid, features artists such as van Gogh, Picasso and David Hockney. These artistic giants reinvented the age-old traditions of portraiture in daring and provocative ways. The exhibit includes 100 masterpieces of painting and sculpture from 75 collections across Europe and North America. The museum is open Tuesday-Sunday. Don’t miss the exciting horse shows at Will Rogers Memorial Center – the American Paint Horse Association World Championship Show that runs July 1-7 and the National Cutting Horse Association Summer Cutting Spectacular, July 10-28, 2007.

“Flat Stanley” Gets Away to Granbury-Finale
By Carolyn Kagy, Marketing Manager, Granbury Convention & Visitors Bureau

The Granbury Visitor Center was lucky enough to receive in the mail “Flat Stanley” from a young student in San Saba, Texas. His experiences and adventures while spending time in Granbury, Texas conclude in this issue. Flat Stanley surely loves Granbury, but misses his family so he is wrapping up his visit. Friday night will find him sitting under the stars in a lawn chair at the Brazos Drive-In watching one of the two movies featured for the night. This old-fashioned theater has been around for fifty years and is one of only ten remaining in Texas. Stanley will visit the 1950s original style concession stand for a homemade burger, French fries, popcorn and a soda. He heard his grandparents talk about the drive-in, but never knew what a treat it was to step back in time and watch a movie outside with friends on one of the biggest screens ever!

Saturday night is nostalgia night. Stanley will visit the Warm Country Heart Theatre for a lively performance of golden country sounds performed by the Warm Country Heart Band. The live “Branson Style” show will fill the night with the smooth musical memories of Boots Randolph, Floyd Cramer, Patsy Cline and Chet Atkins.

Stanley is feeling excited and a little sad that this is his last night in Granbury. He is sure to return with his family to enjoy another fun time at all the wonderful places he has discovered.

To find out more about Granbury, log on to www.granburytx.com or call the Granbury Convention & Visitors Bureau at 1-800-950-2212.

The Promise Prepares to Open in America’s Dream Town
By Billy Huckaby, Director, Glen Rose Convention & Visitors Bureau

One of the major outdoor spectacles in Texas kicks off its 18th season when The Promise opens in Glen Rose on Friday, September 1. This magnificent show, which has been performed in front of hundreds of thousands of people and toured the world to such far away places as Russia, runs every Friday and Saturday night from September through the end of October. The Promise debuted in 1989 and began as a passion play, but has evolved into an exciting, live musical drama that has enthralled generations of spectators. In 1993 The Promise became the first Christian production to be allowed into the former Soviet Union in 1993 and in 1994 returned for a tour of encore performances.

Breathtaking, moving and life changing are all words that have been used by spectators after seeing this epic production. The Promise provides a rare opportunity to present the story and life of Jesus as a musical, which makes it unique among other American passion plays. The Promise is truly a community production as area residents from Glen Rose and surrounding communities work with theatrical professionals from across the country. The show is epic in scale, featuring a large cast of not only people, but also animals.

The Texas Amphitheatre provides the backdrop for The Promise with spectacular sets, sound and lighting. Recognized as one of the top outdoor venues in Texas, the Texas Amphitheatre sits atop a hill overlooking the surrounding area and seats more than 3,000 people.

Tickets for The Promise can be purchased by calling 254-897-3926 or on-line at www.thepromiseglenrose.com. Ticket prices start at $10 and group rates are available. Shows start at 8 p.m.

Glen Rose also offers a number of overnight opportunities ranging from upscale lodges to a variety of bed and breakfasts, cabins, cottages, campgrounds, hotels and RV parks. By Kim Dillon Phillips, Vice President, Denton Convention & Visitors Bureau

The 79th annual North Texas State Fair in Denton, Texas (August 17-25) will be the biggest ever and the best by far!

Nine days of exciting rodeo events and the Denton County Livestock Show are flanked by all kinds of fun for everyone in the family highlighted by "Sound of Texas" top entertainers, great dance bands, country legends and bright new talent. The PRCA Rodeo is a qualifier for the nationals in Las Vegas, so it draws world-champion cowboys and cowgirls from all over the country and even some from outside U.S. borders.

Besides rodeo action, the 2007 fair will include popular annual favorite attractions like the creative arts show, photo exhibit, and the Kid Zone. Highlighting the Fun Zone this year will be a feature dress-up show called Pirates Ahoy! Where kids get to play the parts of swashbucklers. There will also be the always anticipated bounce houses, games, pony rides and petting zoo. Music is as much a part of the Fair as are the cowboys and livestock. The main concert stage will tout some of Texas' best talent: Stoney Larve and Johnny Rodriguez for starters. There is a concert every night. Admittance is $10 for adults and $3 for kids ages 6-12. Kids under 6 are free. Admission ticket includes access to the concerts, rodeo, livestock show, and all the exhibits.
