Cultural History and Entertainment Highlight
Chevrolet Cowboys of Color Invitational Rodeo
By Elizabeth Lawless

The National Cowboys of Color Museum and Hall of Fame, founded by James and Gloria Austin, is located in Southeast Fort Worth. Fort Worth, where the West begins, is the ideal place for a Museum that documents, preserves and presents the multiple contributions of pioneering African Americans, Hispanics, Europeans, Asians and Native Americans as they moved West across America.

To support the Museum, the organization puts on the Chevrolet Cowboys of Color Invitational Rodeo Tour which visits 6 cities in the Southwest. The Rodeo comes to Fort Worth Will Rogers Coliseum on September 4, 2004 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The Rodeo provides living history demonstrations that teach youths and adults about diverse cultural influences while introducing them to contemporary role models. Outstanding athletes in their own right, these cowboys and cowgirls are teachers, policemen, and medical personnel, who work hard, raise families and commit themselves to something they love – the cowboy lifestyle.

“We want kids today to know they can achieve their dreams with hard work, discipline and positive choices,” said Rodeo Producer Cleo Hearn. “If a poor kid like me, from a single parent family, can successfully live my dream, so can they.”
