The Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering
By Douglas Harman
President and CEO, Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau

The Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering returns to Fort Worth October 22-24, and it is one of the finest Western events staged anywhere in the United States. Red Steagall is a great representative of our Western heritage in Texas. For over a decade, he has been bringing this event to our Historic Stockyards. It provides participants and visitors an exciting and authentic glimpse into traditional cowboy music, rodeo, poetry, horse training, cowboy gear and much more.

One of the special features in the Gathering's lineup is the chuck wagon parade on Friday, October 22. More than 20 authentic chuck wagons will roll through downtown Fort Worth, making their way to the Stockyards. Some of the best chuck wagon cooks in America show off their cooking skills for tough judges of cowboy vittles. Throughout this three-day event, the Stockyards will be filled with the sights and sounds of the traditional cowboy lifestyle–from early morning until late in the evening.

This year brings a special treat because Red Steagall will be presenting “The Soul of the West” on October 20 at the beautiful Bass Performance Hall in downtown Fort Worth. Red will be joined by Wilford Brimley, Barry Corbin, Don Edwards and other notable stars telling the story of the cattle drive days through songs and drama. This performance will be a unique opportunity to experience the West in one of the greatest theaters in the world. Ticket information on “Soul of the West” is available through Bass Hall at 817-212-4280, and information on the Cowboy Gathering can be obtained from the Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau at 817-336-8791.

Glen Rose Celebrates Its 1920s History
By Billy Huckaby
Glen Rose Convention & Visitors Bureau

Summer is on the way out and fall is around the corner, which means it is approaching Moonshine Festival time in Glen Rose. This year's date is October 9 and a wide variety of activities are planned.

Glen Rose was once the “Moonshine Capital of Texas,” although at the time it was not a reputation to be proud of. During the Depression, Glen Rose was home to a number of stills and the moonshine industry did a great deal to supplement the local economy. A Texas Ranger raid in the 1920s put a serious dent in the local moonshine business when several stills were busted and more than 40 local citizens arrested.

Today's Moonshine Festival is much more tame and fun than the old moonshine era with something for the entire family. The historic downtown square will provide the setting for arts and crafts vendors, as well as rides and games for the children.

Heritage Park will be the location for a new event this year, an art show and sale. More than 20 accomplished artists are expected to participate and will have their works on display. It is never too early for Christmas shopping, so visitors can be on the look out for unique gifts and bargains.

Other activities during this year's Moonshine Festival will include the Paluxy Pedal Bike Ride and a “Womanless Wedding” at the High School Auditorium. For more information on any of these events, contact the Glen Rose Convention & Visitors Bureau at 1-888-346-6282 or www.glenrosetexas.net.
