Word from the CVBs Gene Autry, Native Son During the 1930s and 1940s, Gene Autry was known as “America’s Favorite Singing Cowboy.” It was the “Golden Era” of western films across the U.S. and around the world. Born in 1907 near Tioga, Texas, Autry’s life is an amazing success story of a man who represented a key cowboy era and the “Cowboy Code.” He was discovered by Will Rogers, one of the Untied State’s greatest heroes, and got into western entertainment through singing on the radio and at rodeos. Autry had a long and successful career as a singing cowboy in radio, movies, and television. He starred in nearly 200 films and TV shows, and also wrote more than 250 songs. He was a successful businessman through Flying A Productions which produced The Gene Autry Show, numerous real estate investments, and professional sports. Fortunately, there are many ways to still enjoy Gene Autry through his music and films as well as through historic recognition and events. In the Fort Worth Historic Stockyards, Gene Autry is recognized on a large bronze marker which is part of the Texas Trail of Fame. The Autry marker is located outside Billy Bob’s Texas, along with a number of other major western music stars. From October 6-8, the 6th Annual Gene Autry Festival will be held at Southfork Ranch north of Dallas. The event has been held in Tioga and is designed to help Tioga keep alive the memory and traditions of Gene Autry. For more information, contact the Tioga Museum & Heritage Association at 940-437-1110. Fort Worth is a community with deep western heritage ties through the Texas Trail of Fame markers, the Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering October 27-29, the weekly rodeo, and, of course, Billy Bob’s Texas. Fort Worth is dedicated to keeping the “Cowboy Code” alive for future generations. Fall into Fun in Fun Central

GrapeFest Celebrates its 20th Anniversary GrapeFest is turning 20 and festival officials are commemorating this special anniversary with a celebration fit for the largest wine festival in the Southwest. Wine lovers and connoisseurs from across the nation will sample award-winning Texas wines during “GrapeFest: A Sparkling Celebration” during Sept. 7, 8, 9 and 10 in historic Grapevine, Texas. Beginning as a weekend wine-tasting event to promote and showcase Grapevine and its historic downtown area, GrapeFest has blossomed into an event that draws nearly a quarter of a million visitors annually. “GrapeFest is a wonderful occasion for families, friends, neighbors and visitors to gather together in celebration of the Texas wine industry,” said Barry Lewis, marketing director for the Grapevine Convention & Visitor’s Bureau. “But more than just wine and grapes, our festival – now in its 20th year – provides something for everyone.” Indeed, GrapeFest is a four-day extravaganza of wine, food, music, entertainment, and family fun for all ages. With six stages of live entertainment, several special wine and culinary pavilions, multiple special events, and all the rides, vendors, and attractions one would expect from a first-rate festival. Of course, the main activity for GrapeFest is the prestigious People’s Choice Wine Tasting Classic. This event, the largest consumer-judged wine competition in the United States, allows patrons to sample and rate wines from 39 different Texas wineries. GrapeFest visitors can also participate in the annual grape stomp where teams of two compete for the coveted “Purple Foot” award by seeing how much juice they can extract from 20 pounds of grapes. After cleaning off all that grape juice, festival-goers can dress up for the Texas Wine Tribute Dinner – a black-tie event saluting award-winning Texas wines and wineries. Besides wines, GrapeFest offers a cornucopia of activities for the young, the old, and everyone in between. Come be part of this “Sparking Celebration.” Can’t make GrapeFest? Tommy Alverson once again brings his Texas Music Family Gathering to Glen Rose, October 4-7, at Tres Rios River Ranch. Top Texas music acts from across the state will be on hand to provide four days and nights of music and fun. Alverson has spent a lifetime playing country music and has become an icon for the Texas music movement. Each year he brings his friends, family and fans together to celebrate the music they enjoy and spending time together. Over the years top performers such as Gary P. Nunn, Billy Joe Shaver, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Jerry Jeff Walker have entertained. More than 30 acts are booked for the 2006 show. Beginning as a very small get-together in 1998 at Melody Mountain Ranch in Stephenville, where it was voted Best Outdoor Event for 1999 by Met magazine (Dallas). The Gathering is a great showcase of Texas music bringing together veterans and new talent alike to form a music festival that appeals to a large, diverse audience while it retains the feeling of the “Texas Music Family.” In 2002 the festival moved to Glen Rose at the Tres Rios River Ranch, where the number of fans and friends reached approximately 2,500. In 2003 the numbers rose to 4,000. Tres Rios River Ranch in Glen Rose provides the perfect setting on the banks of the Brazos and Paluxy rivers for a Texas music festival. Plenty of campsites are available for tent camping, plus RV spaces and cabins can be rented. There will be plenty of food concessions, plus crafts and commercial vendors on hand. The plan is pretty simple, come on out, pitch a tent, enjoy the music, and let your cares pass on by. Either day passes or four-day passes can be purchased. For event line-ups and more details, go to www.tommyalverson.com. For more information on Glen Rose and the surrounding area, contact the Glen Rose Convention and Visitors Bureau at 1-888-346-6282 or check out their web site at www.glenrosetexas.net. Come see why Glen Rose was named America’s Dream Town in 2004. Denton's Main Street–Arts, Antiques & Autos Extravaganza Denton's Main Street gears up for fall with Arts, Antiques & Autos Extravaganza from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9. Held on the historic Courthouse Square in Denton, this family oriented event offers a wide variety of activities throughout the day with free admission. The festival celebrates the vibrant town square that is nationally recognized as a Great American Main Street Community. The Arts, Antiques & Autos Extravaganza may strike some as an unlikely meshing of concepts, but that's the whole idea. The not-so-secret mission of this annual festival, now in its seventh year, is to create an event with something for everyone, with themes that lure ladies and gents alike. Some festival-goers come specifically to find that special "object d'art." Others have family heirlooms in tow heading for the Attic Treasure Appraisals where experts in everything from general antiques to dishes and dolls to sports memorabilia provide analysis and advice. Still others enjoy the musical acts and strolling entertainers. An Arts, Antiques & Autos highlight for gals and guys alike is checking out the dream machines lining the square. Autos constitute the largest segment of the festival with more than 150 antique, hot rod, and even custom cars. Beautiful, mint-condition automobiles from various decades will compete for trophies, and more importantly, for bragging rights. As for art, dozens of craftsmen, jewelers, painters and sculptors will display their work in this juried fine arts and crafts show. Specialty shops and restaurants on the Courthouse Square will compliment the ambiance with flavor and style that is uniquely Denton. Arts, Antiques & Autos is the ideal way to spend a Saturday.
