FORT WORTH BOTANIC GARDEN
The 7.5 acre Japanese Garden, with its waterfalls and pools of Koi fish, set among a forest of trees and shrubs, is a place of peaceful beauty. The climate controlled environment of the Conservatory allows a tropical rain forest to flourish. Banana trees, coral plants, the Sago palm and the Frangipani whose flowers are often used in Hawaiian leis, all grow there. During the Fall Plant and Bulb Sale, Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring different Plant Societies, offers trees, shrubs, grasses, fall-perennials and spring-blooming bulbs. For a different twist on West meets East, come to the Japanese Fall Festival, Oct. 19 and 20. Activities and entertainment include the paper art of origami, the music of wood flutes, the beat of the taiko drums, or having your name written in Japanese by a calligrapher, learning the mysteries of a Japanese tea ceremony and enjoying foods with names you may not be able to pronounce. Also see traditional Japanese dance, exhibitions of martial arts, or learn the art of bonsai gardening and ikebana, the arrangement of cut flowers. Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon-5. Gen. Ad. $4.50, children 4 to 12 $2, under 4, free. 3220 Botanic Garden Blvd., 817-871-7686 or www.fwbg.com. Current
