Gospel Truth –Texas Style
by Don Patterson

The life of Christ has been told in countless ways from ancient passion plays to modern movies and musicals. One of the most unique versions is the long running stage production, The Promise, presented on weekends from June through October in Glen Rose. It retells the gospel story in brilliant music, song, and choreography with dazzling lighting, live animals, and special effects. Staged in the massive Texas Amphitheatre, the story is narrated by an aging grandfather who has taken his two grandchildren on a camping trip in the Texas hills. He uses simple story telling to answer the questions asked by his grandson and granddaughter. Scenes from the gospels are illuminated above and around these three players as the story unfolds. A huge cast of professional and amateur actors participate in telling the powerful story of Jesus’ journey from birth, to death, and resurrection. The Promise appeals to those of all faiths, presenting Christ in a non-denominational way, but leaving his message of peace and love intact.

The Texas Amphitheatre is a fitting site for the stirring production. Designed by Peter Wolf of Dallas to take advantage of the rolling hills as a backdrop, the Texas Amphitheatre features a Greco-Roman set with 42-foot arches and a six-story archway towering over a 65 x 100 square foot tri-level stage. Word Music, Incorporated, originally developed The Promise in cooperation with Kingdom Development Company from an original script by Dr. Jan Dargatz. The music was developed by Gary Rhodes.

Philip R. Hobson, Promise Board of Directors Vice President and production manager, describes the play this way: “The production is a great outreach program that churches of all denominations attend. The costumes, lighting, animals, and fast moving pace of the show make for great entertainment that can be enjoyed by all ages.”

Like many large production companies, The Promise requires continual financial support. “Anyone wishing to become involved in The Promise may contact me personally,” Hobson explains.

The production office may be reached at P.O. Box 2460, 5000 Texas Drive, Glen Rose, TX 76043. Tickets: 800-687-2661, Box Office, 254-897-3926, Fax: 254-898-0405.
