Word from the CVBs Fort Worth’s Fall Festivities Fun this fall starts in Fort Worth. Mark your calendar for the various fall festivals in the City of Cowboys and Culture. Cowtown Coliseum commemorates its 100th anniversary on Saturday, October 6 at 11 a.m. Ceremonies will include the rededication of the building’s cornerstone and placement of a time capsule designated to be opened in 2057. Cowtown Coliseum is home to some of rodeo's most famous firsts, including the world’s first exhibition roundup of cattle and the first indoor rodeo. Famous guests have included Theodore Roosevelt in 1911, the Russian Ballet in 1916, Bob Wills in 1947 and Elvis Presley in 1956. October 26-28 brings the ever-popular Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering to the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. This three-day festival promotes the cowboy way of life. Fall means Family Fun in Grapevine, Texas, where great activities are planned for the young and young at heart. The Nash Farm Fall Roundup is Saturday, October 13, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the historic 1859 farmstead located at 626 Ball Street, three blocks west of Historic Downtown Grapevine. Activities will include a petting zoo, pony rides, pumpkin chunkin’ contests, storytelling, blacksmith demonstrations, bluegrass music, storytelling, crafts, a stick horse rodeo, hayride and more. FREE. Monarch Butterflies heading south for the winter will pass through Grapevine! Come celebrate their migration on Saturday, October 20, during Grapevine’s famous Butterfly Flutterby. The fun begins at 9:30 a.m. with the Gossamer Parade lineup in Liberty Park for children and pets dressed in butterfly regalia. The parade ends at the Grapevine Heritage Center, 701 S. What a perfect time to enjoy family festivities in Granbury celebrating the annual Harvest Moon Festival, sponsored by the Historic Granbury Merchants Association. Arts and crafts vendors, pumpkin carving, scarecrow contests and children’s games are just a small part of this two-day celebration of fall. The free festivities take place on the historic downtown square starting Saturday, October 20 and going until Sunday, October 21 at 5 p.m. The Lake Granbury Art Association will sponsor the Fall Paint Out in conjunction with this years’ Harvest Moon Festival. Artists from Texas and all around the U.S. will paint at various locations, capturing the ambiance of historic sites, architecture, fall foliage or scenery, local festival activities or the colorful wares of the festival itself. Festival goers will have an opportunity to observe artists at work and to purchase their favorite pieces of art. The public is encouraged to attend a finale reception Sunday, October 21 from 2-4 p.m. at the American Town Hall, where the Mayor’s Choice Award will be presented, along with drawings for prizes, which will include a donated artwork. The Granbury Quilters’ Guild will present their “Scraps of Love” quilt show to be held in the Granbury City hall complex. Judged quilts will be displayed, and vendors will be on hand with fabric, patterns. A silent auction and raffle are also scheduled. The show takes place Saturday, October 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, October 21 from noon until 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, children under 12 admitted free. Fall Brings Unique Events to Glen Rose By Billy Huckaby, Director, Glen Rose Convention & Visitors Bureau Fall always brings some exciting events to Glen Rose and this year is no different. The Paluxy Pedal Bike Ride takes place on October 13. The Fall Texas Woodcarving Rally is set for Oakdale Park from October 29 through November 3. Fossilmania is another popular event in Glen Rose and is set for October 26, 27 and 28. The Paluxy Pedal features rides for all levels and will roll along the scenic byways of Somervell County. Distances vary from 29 miles to 80 miles and the ride gets underway at 8:30 a.m. Fossilmania is put on by the Austin and Dallas paleontological societies at the Somervell County Expo Center and is an annual fossil and fossil-related show featuring exhibits, educational programs and commercial vendors. Admission to the event and all of the educational programs, are free to the public and free fossils will also be available for all of the children. The Fall Texas Woodcarving Rally at Oakdale Park is another annual event in Glen Rose that offers instructional classes, a show and sale that is open to the public. Instructional classes start on October 29 and run through November 3. The show and sale will be November 3 and 4. Classes will be available for all levels including beginners, intermediate and advanced carving. Oakdale Park has cabins and RV spaces available for overnight guests. There are also a number of other accommodations available in Glen Rose, ranging from cabins, bed & breakfasts, RV parks to hotels. Fossil Rim Wildlife Center also has a number of special activities planned for the fall ranging from Discovery After Dark to their monthly animal encounters. Denton, Texas Denton will present a brand new, first-time Halloween Festival on Halloween night, October 31, 2007. The event will be held on the Courthouse Square in downtown Denton from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Halloween Festival will include all the family fun one expects at a Halloween Festival: Trick-or-Treating, games, candy, and fun for the kid in all of us. While the festival will be a howling good time on its own-Denton has a lot more spooky fun beyond just Halloween night. The 1857 Old West Haunted House is a fright-filled adventure that captures the challenges faced by the pioneers of Denton. It winds its way from the Courthouse lawn into and through the basement of the Courthouse, originally the county jail, and several chills and thrills later, back out onto the lawn. The Haunted House is open October 29-31 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Not recommended for little kids or scaredy cats! The whole month of October kicks off with an authentic Treasure Hunt. Five keys are hidden throughout Denton County, and beginning October 1, a new clue for each key will be released. The five hunters that find a key will come to the Courthouse Square on Halloween night to see which treasure hunter has the key that will open the Denton County Treasure Box.
