Bragan Youth Foundation to Honor Jim Morris Oct. 30 Jim Morris, baseball’s oldest rookie, who defied all odds to make his major league debut at age 35 and was the subject of the 2002 Disney film The Rookie will be honored at the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation’s 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award Gala on Oct. 30 at the new Omni Hotel in downtown Fort Worth. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Morris’ big league debut, which came in 1999 with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays against the Texas Rangers at The Ballpark in Arlington. The part of Morris was played in the 2002 movie by actor Dennis Quaid. The night will also mark the 92nd birthday of Fort Worth’s “Mr. Baseball” Bobby Bragan.
“Our foundation sets an example for young people,” said Bragan. “We have that in common with Jim Morris, who through his amazing accomplishment as the oldest rookie was an example himself to young people everywhere, of what can be accomplished through determination and by honoring a promise.” Tickets are available for this special evening by calling the BBYF office at 817-870-2300. Bobby Bragan established the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation in 1991 and to date has awarded more than $1 million dollars to 473 students representing 21 school districts across the metroplex. The mission of the foundation is simple: to support, encourage, and motivate eighth grade students to become outstanding scholars, citizens and athletes and to serve as leaders and role models for their peers.
