Word from the CVBs "Stubbs & The Horse" Few cities are more thoroughly associated with the horse than Fort Worth. Before the pioneers came to this region, vast areas of Texas were dominated by Comanche and Kiowa Indians as a result of their great equestrian skills. Cattle became a dominant Texas industry, aided by the use of the horse, and Fort Worth became a center for livestock selling, buying and trading in the Historic Stockyards. Today, horses remain important to our community as a result of their continuing use in the livestock industry as well as their huge popularity in rodeo, cutting events, and trail riding. Fort Worth museums have always had great equestrian art, especially in the Amon Carter and Sid Richardson collections. Now the city will host one of the finest collections of paintings about the horse, an exhibit by the famous British artist George Stubbs. The great Kimbell Art Museum will showcase the “Stubbs & the Horse” exhibit from November 14, 2004 to February 6, 2005. Over the centuries, civilizations around the world utilized horses as key elements in their commerce and military forces. The British placed special emphasis on them, and as a result, artists from Great Britain often focused on the horse in their paintings and drawings. George Stubbs (1724-1806) was the greatest of these English artists, and his works have long been admired for their wonderful depictions of the great breeds of horses admired by the British. The Kimbell Art Museum, along with the Walters Art Museum of Baltimore and London’s National Gallery, organized this exhibit of Stubbs’ work. This special exhibit will be another great opportunity to enjoy the wonderful horse culture of Fort Worth.
