Artwork Unveiled in Downtown Glen Rose A major work of art was placed on the Glen Rose Courthouse lawn on September 15. The Barnards of the Brazos: First Family of Glen Rose was commissioned by the Somervell History Foundation and sculpted by local and nationally known artist Robert Summers. The bronze depicts Charles and Juana Barnard who helped establish Glen Rose when they settled in the area and built Barnard’s Mill, which served as a gristmill and trading post. Both had interesting backgrounds. Charles was a business partner with Sam Houston and helped establish trading posts along the Brazos River. Comanche captured Juana when she was a teenager and was later ransomed by George Barnard, Charles’ brother. Robert Summers is considered one of the top sculptors in the United States and is a Glen Rose resident. His previous works include the world’s largest bronze, which is at Pioneer Plaza in downtown Dallas. The work consists of 40 plus steers, three riders and three horses and all are 130% life-size. He also created the statue of Tom Landry at Texas Stadium and John Wayne at the Orange County International Airport. He has won numerous awards during his illustrious career including Western Artist of the Year, awarded by the Academy of Western Art and he was named the Official Artist by the Texas Legislature for the Texas Sesquicentennial. The Somervell History Foundation is involved in a number of projects in Glen Rose including operating Barnard’s Mill and the Barnard’s Mill Art Museum. They are dedicated to promoting and preserving the rich local history of the area. More detailed information is available on the Texas Historical Commission website at www.tsha.utexas.edu. There is also a book about Juana titled Juana: Spanish Girl in Central Texas by Pearl Andrus. The first editions of the book are high collectables, but the Somervell County History Foundation has a new edition available. For more information on Glen Rose and the surrounding area, contact the Glen Rose CVB at 1-888-346-6282 or www.glenrosetexas.net. Come see why Glen Rose was named America’s Dream Town in 2004.
