KEY Fort Worth

Word from the CVBs

Fort Worth’s Parade of Lights
By Douglas Harman
President and CEO, Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau

Fort Worth is the museum capital of Texas and the Southwest. The “Gauguin and Impressionism” exhibit opening this month at the Kimbell Art Museum once again underscores the standing that Fort Worth has in the art world. Many artistic themes generate strong enthusiasm, but impressionist art always seems to be at the top in terms of broad public interest. Impressionism was a key turning point in art history, and Gauguin was one of the most important individuals to change basic perspectives in art. The Kimbell Art Museum will host this significant exhibit from December 18, 2005 until March 26, 2006. It is the only U.S. venue for the Gauguin show, and will surely draw attention from art lovers across the country.

Not only is this exhibit about an immensely popular artist, but it focuses on a critical period in his career that is not broadly known, even by people who are fans of his work. The “Gauguin and Impressionism” show focuses on the period between 1875 to 1887 when the young Gauguin was beginning to have an important impact on the emerging impressionism painting in Europe. The exhibit brings together 50 paintings and 15 sculptures and ceramics from both private and public collections from around the world.

The exhibit illustrates the important influences of other great impressionists of the time including Pissarro, Degas, and others. The Gauguin exhibit should not be missed, and while in Fort Worth, art lovers can visit the other great museums in our city including the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the Amon Carter Museum.

Glen Rose Rocks
By Billy Huckaby
Glen Rose Convention & Visitors Bureau

Glen Rose has long been the “Dinosaur Capital of Texas,” but is earning a lot of attention for its abundance of petrified wood architecture in the community. Some historians think Glen Rose may have the largest concentration of petrified wood buildings in the nation.

During the 1920s, petrified wood was used by builders though out much of north central Texas, and many of those buildings remain in use in Glen Rose. The rock remains from a forest that covered Central Texas 110 million years ago, dating back to the same era as the dinosaur tracks in Glen Rose. The petrified wood came from conifer trees that are now extinct. Rock resulted when the trees or plants were submerged in water and saturated with minerals. After the plant became water-logged, the minerals replaced the original cell structure.

Old is now in, and Glen Rose has an abundance of old from the dinosaur tracks that have been called the best preserved in the country to its petrified wood. But even if old is not your thing, Glen Rose still makes a great escape to a laid-back lifestyle with plenty of hills and rivers.

For more information on Glen Rose and the surrounding area, contact the Glen Rose Convention and Visitors Bureau at 1-888-346-6282 or check out the website at www.glenrosetexas.net. Come see why Glen Rose was named “America’s Dream Town” in 2004.
